78. Simbolismo meccanico, 1969, oil on canvas, xm 40 x 50
This horizontal painting is particularly interesting because it presents an almost “architectural” structure within Mechanical Symbolism. It is distinguished by a strong contrast between the static nature of a central structure and the dynamism of the gears surrounding it. The entire scene is immersed in a light blue background, which gently fades to darker hues in the corners, creating a sense of aerial depth. A diagonally placed rectangle dominates the center of the canvas. Within it, the color bright red takes center stage, framed by sharp black borders that define the shapes. These black lines draw a sort of fantastical edifice, culminating in a kind of dome located precisely at the geometric heart of the rectangle and of the entire painting. It is a point of perfect equilibrium. The apparent static nature of this central edifice is interrupted by a mechanical system in action: There are two cogwheels, positioned mirror-image: one in the lower right corner and the other in the upper left corner. A diagonal line (the belt) connects the two wheels, suggesting the mechanism is in operation. This element destabilizes the scene, conveying the idea of flowing energy. Other small circles are scattered across the surface, like fragments or smaller gears orbiting the main structure.
Imagine this painting as a “powerhouse” of thought: at the center, the solidity of the dome (almost a temple of technology) and around it, the rotating motion of the wheels that generates mechanical life.
